MSc Applied Computing

Course Overview

The MSc Applied Computing is a conversion course designed for graduates whose degree is not in computing but who wish to enter the Information Technology (IT) sector. The programme introduces students to key computer science concepts, including software development, database systems, networking, and web development.

Students will gain a professional understanding of the processes required to design, implement, and support modern IT systems. A professional work placement may also be available as part of the assessment. Teaching combines lectures, practical lab sessions, group work, tutorials, and independent study, while assessment is based on individual written reports, practical assignments, and a Master’s project.

The MSc Applied Computing course is based in the School of Computing, which has state-of-the-art facilities at both the City Campus and the riverside Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter’s.

Entry Requirements

Candidates must submit a personal statement explaining their interest in the course, along with an academic and/or employer reference, and their CV showing relevant experience.

Grade Requirements:

  • At least a 2:2 honours degree or a 2.40 / 5 GPA in any subject.
  • Equivalent international qualifications are accepted.

English Proficiency:

  • An overall score of 6.0 in IELTS Academic, with no component below 5.5.
  • Other accepted tests include PTE Academic and CPE (Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English).

Cost of Study

The tuition fee for international students on the MSc Applied Computing programme at the University of Sunderland is £19,000 per year (subject to change).

Scholarships

The University of Sunderland offers several scholarships and discounts for international postgraduate students. The Global Leaders Scholarship provides a £4,500 reduction in tuition fees for new international students and is automatically applied upon acceptance.

In addition, specific discounts are available for courses such as MSc Applied Computing, offering reductions of £1,000 or £3,400 depending on the intake. Returning graduates may qualify for the Alumni Loyalty Scheme, which provides a 20% tuition discount. However, students receiving the Global Leaders Scholarship are not eligible for this additional discount. All discounts are applied directly to tuition fees and reflected in the offer letter.
