BSc Construction Management

Course Overview

This BSc (Hons) Construction Management degree at the University of Portsmouth is a detailed programme created to give students the necessary knowledge and skills to manage building projects effectively. The course combines basic building principles, such as how things are built, how costs are calculated, and the laws relating to contracts, with chances to learn practical things about the industry.

A key part of the programme is the option to do a paid work placement year. This allows students to use what they have learned in a real job and make useful professional contacts. The teaching plan is designed to build a strong understanding of both the technical and management sides of construction. This includes everything from initial planning and managing money to supervising work on site and following building rules and quality standards.

The way of learning on this degree involves a mix of classroom teaching, practical work in labs and on-site visits, and looking at real-life examples from companies in the industry. The ways students are assessed include different methods like written assignments, exams, presentations, and project work. This allows students to show their understanding and skills in various ways.

The programme also focuses on developing important management abilities, such as being a leader, working in a team, solving problems, and communicating well. These are very important for a successful career in the building industry. Students have the chance to focus their studies by choosing optional subjects that match their specific interests and career plans, such as building in a sustainable way and using Building Information Modelling (BIM).
