MSc Psychology

Course Overview

The MSc Psychology at Northumbria University, Newcastle, is accredited by The British Psychological Society (BPS). The programme is designed for graduates who hold a degree in psychology or any discipline, and are seeking to pursue a masters degree in psychology. Students will further increase their understanding of the human mind and behaviour, and will also study individual differences, philosophies and research methods.

Throughout this programme, the students will develop an advanced understanding in areas including cognitive and developmental psychology, biological and social psychology, individual differences and psychological research methods. The students will learn through discussion-based sessions, interactive lectures, tutorials and online discussions. Assessment is either exam-based or through written assignments such as laboratory reports, research articles, presentations and a major research project on a chosen topic.

About University

Northumbria University is a public research university located in Newcastle, North East England.  The university has its origins in the Rutherford College, founded in 1877. It then became Newcastle Polytechnic in 1969 before gaining university status in 1992. The university has approximately 38,300 students.

The campus has a wide range of facilities to support students' learning. These facilities include classrooms, a Psychology and Communication Technology (PaCT) lab, a library, clinics, science labs, studios, sports centres, and several learning spaces. Dedicated students’ support services are also provided to students throughout their studies.

The university has approximately 20,580 undergraduates and 10,045 postgraduate students studying across its four faculties. The faculties include Arts, Design and Social Sciences, Business and Law, Engineering and Environment, and Health and Life Sciences. Programmes are offered at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels across these faculties.

Entry Requirements

All interested applicants are to submit a personal statement discussing their interest in the MSc Psychology programme and relevant academic or professional experience, including an academic or employer reference. A CV may be uploaded to show any relevant work experience.

Grade Requirements:

  • Applicants should hold a minimum of a second‑class honours degree (2:2 ) in any discipline.

English Proficiency:

  • Applicants whose first language is not English require an overall IELTS score of 6.5 with no component below 6.0.
  • Other equivalents, such as TOEFL or PTE, are accepted.

Cost of Study

The tuition fee for the MSc Psychology in the 2025/26 academic year is £20,950 for international students. Tuition fees are reviewed annually and are subject to change.

Scholarships

Northumbria University, Newcastle, offers scholarships and bursaries to full-time eligible international students to help fund their studies. The European Union (EU) scholarship gives students who wish to study for a postgraduate degree a scholarship of up to £3,000, awarded on a case-by-case basis. International students can also qualify for the London Cost of Living Bursary worth £1,334 to cover living costs for one month in London.
