MSc Data Science

Course Overview

The MSc Data Science at Northumbria University, Newcastle, is aimed at graduates having an undergraduate degree in computing/information sciences, or mathematical and statistical disciplines, who wish to advance their career by becoming a data scientist.

The modules covered include principles of data science, computational and statistical methods and techniques, programming in Python and R, advanced databases, Big Data in a cloud computing setting, machine learning, and transferable skills in project management and research.

Teaching methods include a combination of lectures, workshops, labs, seminars and tutorials.  The assessment is through coursework, including critical report writing, portfolio and projects. Students will undertake a major data science project by specialising in a subject of interest.

Northumbria University is a public institution located in Newcastle, England.  The university has its origins in the Rutherford College, founded in 1877. It then became Newcastle Polytechnic in 1969 before gaining university status in 1992. The university has approximately 38,300 students.

Applicants are to submit a personal statement explaining their interest in the MSc Data Science and relevant academic or professional experience, including an academic or employer reference. A CV may be uploaded to show any relevant work experience.

Grade Requirements:

  • Applicants normally require a minimum of a 2:2 honours degree (or equivalent) in a quantitative subject such as computer/information science, engineering, maths, statistics, or a related discipline (e.g. IT, software engineering).

English Proficiency:

  • Applicants whose first language is not English need an overall IELTS score of 6.5 with no component below 5.5.
  • Other equivalents, such as TOEFL or PTE, are accepted.
