MEng Mechanical Engineering

Course Overview

This MEng programme provides the practical skills and expertise required for a successful career as a practising engineer, with the educational basis to enable progression into engineering management roles. The course allows you to explore modern mechanical engineering, with the option of a year in industry, a significant project in the later years of study, and a final interdisciplinary project that leads to the integrated master's qualification.

The learning is a practical one with students learning to apply engineering principles to real-life problems and also understand engineering in a broader social, moral, sustainable, and economic context. The course is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), and partially meets the requirements for becoming a Chartered Engineer (CEng). The examination techniques involve exams, coursework, presentations and laboratory and project work.

Entry Requirements for Sri Lankan Students

To be enrolled, you need to submit a personal statement in which you discuss your reasons for applying for the course and other relevant information regarding your studies. A relevant academic and/or employer reference is also required. You can also upload your CV to demonstrate your work experience.

Grade Requirements:

  • You need 112 UCAS Tariff points, including A-levels, T-levels, BTEC Diplomas/Extended Diplomas, Scottish and Irish Highers, Access to HE Diplomas, or the International Baccalaureate. Or equivalent qualifications are also needed.

English Proficiency:

  • Applicants from non-English speaking backgrounds should have a minimum overall IELTS (Academic) score of 5.5, with at least 5.5 in each component, or an approved equivalent test score like TOEFL.

Cost of Study

For the 2025/26 entry, the tuition fee for international students taking the MEng Mechanical Engineering at Northumbria University, Newcastle is £20,950 per year.

Scholarships

Northumbria University offers a variety of support packages for students. The Cobham-Ultra UK Undergraduate Scholarships award two engineering students £3,500 in their first year. This is for UK students with a household income under £35,000 who are studying on specific engineering courses, including MEng Mechanical Engineering. Additionally, the Northumbria Undergraduate Global Scholarship provides a £3,000 discount on tuition fees for eligible international students.
