LLM Bar Course

Course Overview

The LLM Bar Course at Northumbria University, Newcastle, allows students to apply their knowledge and skills to practice in a range of areas, focusing on the foundational practice in family, civil and criminal law. They will develop their skills in advocacy, conferencing, drafting and opinion writing through simulation learning. This practical experience will equip them to be efficient legal practitioners.

Northumbria University's LLM BAR offers students two possible routes to the LLM Project qualification: a traditional dissertation focusing on the in-depth examination of a substantive area of law of their choosing of between 10,000 and 15,000 words or a combination of clinical experience gained in the Student Law Office, together with an extended piece of written work of between 8,000 and 10,000 words.

These projects will enable students to develop professional skills necessary for practice, enhance their legal knowledge and build theiràpaà ability to analyse and reflect on law, practice and policy.

Entry Requirements for Sri Lankan Students

To apply for this course, applicants must join one of the four Inns of Court before starting the course. They must have achieved a minimum standard as specified by the BSB within the past five years.   • Applicants are expected to have a minimum of a 2:1 honours degree in law or a commendation in the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) – or to be on track to achieve this. English Proficiency:

  • If English is not your first language, you will usually need to provide evidence of your English language proficiency by having an overall IELTS score of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each component, which is typically required.
  • The university also accepts other equivalent English language qualifications.
