BSc Neuroscience with Psychology

Course Overview

The BSc Neuroscience with Psychology at Keele University explores how the human brain works and how the human mind and behaviour are connected. Students will study neuroscience subjects such as neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, neuropharmacology, and neuropathology, which basically deal with how nerve cells work, how the brain grows and changes, and how it can repair itself after damage. The course is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, meaning it meets professional standards. Students use laboratories to test ideas, run experiments, and analyse data using both theory and practical work, so they will graduate with knowledge and skills that can lead to a successful career in fields such as neuroscience, psychology, or biological sciences.

The programme lasts three years full-time. You can choose to add an extra year for a placement in industry or a year studying abroad, making it four years. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge of cell biology, molecular biology, and human physiology, along with the basics of brain structure and function. They also learn introductory psychology and how to design experiments. In the second and third years, you’ll go deeper into specialised areas like cognitive neuroscience, how drugs affect brain function, social behaviour, and brain repair after injury. In your final year, you will complete a research project, either in the lab or using computer analysis, under the guidance of neuroscience staff. Throughout the programme, you'll gain versatile and transferable research skills in design, experimentation, and data analysis.

Students learn through a blend of lectures, hands-on lab sessions in Keele’s modern Central Science Laboratories, group discussions, and research-based learning. The programme emphasises how experimental science and psychology go together, while assessments include written assignments, lab reports, presentations, data analysis tasks, and your final research project. Some assessments may also involve practical tasks like demonstrating psychological experiments or interpreting real data. These help you build strong skills for future jobs and studies.
