The De Montfort University BSc Forensic Science programme is designed to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge they need to pursue a career in the field of crime scene processing, DNA profiling, and other important forensic techniques. The curriculum is designed with Leicestershire Police and accredited by The Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences. The block teaching process is employed in the course, i.e. students study one module at a time, allowing for regular assessments rather than a concentration of exams at the end of the year.
The programme starts off with a background in chemistry and biology before proceeding to specialised topics in the second year, which include criminal justice and examination of bodies, tissues and fluids. The last year covers more advanced topics such as DNA profiling and toxicology, and a major independent research project. A major characteristic of the course is its practical element, where facilities such as a mock crime house are used by the students.
