LLM Master of Laws

The Master of Laws (LLM) programme at Teesside University is designed to help students achieve their professional goals by offering flexibility to select modules aligned with their interests — particularly within the vital area of Human Rights Law. The course provides a deep understanding of key legal principles and explores current legal challenges across both UK and international contexts.

Students benefit from modern, practice-oriented teaching enhanced by digital tools and resources. The programme also promotes direct engagement with legal professionals and employers, enabling students to expand their professional networks and improve their career prospects.

Assessment focuses on developing both academic and professional competencies. Instead of relying solely on exams, students are assessed through a mix of critical essays, personal reflections, presentations, and participation in moots (mock courtroom exercises). The programme concludes with a substantial independent research project — the LLM Dissertation — which allows students to explore a chosen area of legal interest in depth.

Students also have the opportunity to gain real-world experience through the University’s Law Clinic, where they can provide free legal advice to members of the community under the supervision of qualified solicitors.

Applicants must submit a personal statement explaining their motivations for studying the LLM, along with relevant academic or employer references. Submitting a CV to highlight professional experience is encouraged.

Grade Requirements:

• A minimum of a 2:2 honours degree in a legal or related discipline.
• Applicants with an equivalent qualification or significant professional experience in a relevant area may also be considered.

English Proficiency:

• International applicants whose first language is not English must achieve an IELTS score of at least 6.5 overall, with no component below 5.5, or an equivalent English test score.

The tuition fee for international students studying the LLM Master of Laws full-time is £17,000 per year.

Teesside University offers financial support for international students enrolling in the LLM Master of Laws through a selection of competitive scholarships. The most prestigious is the Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship, which awards £7,000 as a fee reduction in the first year to outstanding students who demonstrate the potential to become future global leaders; applicants must submit a personal statement for consideration. Additionally, the high-value British Council GREAT Scholarship provides £10,000 for students from specific eligible countries, such as Egypt, Pakistan, or Spain, who are applying for a one-year postgraduate course.
