MSc Dental Therapy

The MSc Dental Therapy at Teesside University, Middlesbrough, is a professional master's programme designed to help qualified dental hygienists become independent dental therapists. Graduates are eligible to apply to the General Dental Council (GDC) for registration as dental therapists, expanding their scope of practice and career opportunities in oral health and disease prevention.

The course blends theory and practice through lectures, seminars, and practical training sessions conducted in the university’s phantom head laboratory — a simulated dental surgery environment. Students also complete a dissertation based on independent research. Assessment methods include written coursework, professional portfolio evaluations, and practical Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs).

Students are required to complete a minimum of 14 hours of work-based learning each week throughout the 20-month programme, ensuring real-world clinical experience alongside academic study.

Applicants must submit a personal statement detailing their motivation and relevant background, along with a suitable academic or employer reference. A Curriculum Vitae (CV) may also be included to demonstrate professional experience.

Grade Requirements:

Applicants must hold an appropriate diploma or degree in dental hygiene and be a currently registered Dental Hygienist with the General Dental Council (GDC). Additionally, candidates must have professional indemnity insurance and an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

English Language Requirements:

International applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English with a minimum overall IELTS score of 6.5 or an equivalent Secure English Language Test (SELT) recognised by the university.

International students applying for the MSc Dental Therapy programme may qualify for several prestigious scholarships at Teesside University, including:
