BSc Software Engineering with Foundation Year

Course Overview

The BSc (Hons) Software Engineering (with Foundation Year) at Teesside University is a four-year full-time degree designed for students who do not meet the standard entry requirements for direct entry into the main degree. The foundation year provides essential academic and technical preparation to help students succeed in higher-level software engineering studies.

During the foundation year, students take introductory modules in mathematics, computing fundamentals, and study skills to build the necessary foundation for Year 1. As the course progresses, students develop technical and professional skills in programming, system design, requirement analysis, databases, software testing, systems security, and project management.

Students have the opportunity to work on real projects, industry briefs, and group work and can also choose an optional placement year to gain valuable industry experience. The total duration of study is four years (or five years with a placement).

Learning takes place through lectures, tutorials, workshops, lab sessions, and group projects, giving students hands-on experience with modern software tools and development environments. Assessment methods include programming assignments, project deliverables, written reports, exams, presentations, and a final honours project.
