BSc Biochemistry

Course Overview

The BSc Biochemistry at Northumbria University, Newcastle, is designed for students who seek to pursue a career in research, healthcare or industry. It provides students wth a comprehensive training in biochemistry by combining aspects of biology and chemistry. The students will study modern biochemistry at the molecular level, which enables them to understand the biological processes that influence all living organisms. Students can choose to complete a placement year either in the UK or internationally to gain industrial experience.

In this course, students will learn in areas including the application of biochemistry, biological, medicinal and analytical chemistry, cell biology and genetics, human metabolism, molecular biology, and analytical methods. The teaching methods include lectures, laboratory practicals in each year, lab sessions, seminars, and independent study. The assessment methods include lab reports, written assignments and a final research project in a particular biochemical discipline.

About University

Northumbria University is a public research university located in Newcastle, North East England.  The university has its origins in the Rutherford College, founded in 1877. It then became Newcastle Polytechnic in 1969 before gaining university status in 1992. The university has approximately 38,300 students.

The campus has a wide range of facilities to support students' learning. These facilities include classrooms, a Psychology and Communication Technology (PaCT) lab, a library, clinics, science labs, studios, sports centres, and several learning spaces. Entry Requirements for Nepalese Students

Applicants are to submit a personal statement explaining their interest in the BSc Biochemistry and relevant academic or relevant experience, including an academic or employer reference. A CV may be uploaded to show any relevant work experience.

Grade Requirements:

  • Applicants typically need 112 UCAS Tariff points (From a combination of acceptable Level 3 qualifications, which may include: A-level, T Level or BTEC Diplomas/Extended Diplomas).
  • Alternatively, equivalent qualifications in relevant fields are considered.

English Proficiency:

  • Non-English speaking applicants need an overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0, with a minimum of 5.5 in each component.
  • Alternative English language tests like PTE or TOEFL are accepted.

Cost of Study

The tuition fee for this course is £20,950 per year for international students. Tuition fees are reviewed annually and are subject to change.

Scholarships

Northumbria University is committed to supporting students with outstanding academic ability. It offers support packages to international students depending on academic achievement or personal financial circumstances. International students can also qualify for the London Cost of Living Bursary worth £1,334 to cover the living costs for one month in London.
