MArch Architecture

Course Overview

The MArch Architecture is a two-year, full-time master's degree that meets the professional standards for becoming a registered architect (ARB/RIBA Part 2). This programme focuses on Contextual Awareness and Environmental Literacy, so students will learn to think critically, communicate clearly, and reflect on their designs. The curriculum is all about helping students find their place as architects by exploring their social, cultural, and environmental responsibilities in the field.

Students will gain hands-on experience with projects based on real research, which means they can apply their critical thinking skills directly to their designs. They will take modules like "Design Project 1: Experimentation" and "Design Project 2: Speculation," where they are encouraged to be creative and critically assess their work. They will be taught by a team of award-winning architects and academics and will use modern studios, labs, and advanced facilities in central Newcastle.

About University

Northumbria University is a highly respected university in Newcastle upon Tyne, which is often named one of the UK's best cities for students. In 2022, it was even named the UK University of the Year at the Times Higher Education Awards, showing just how great and modern it has become. Students can find its main campus right in the heart of Newcastle, with another one in London.

The university offers a huge variety of courses, not just in architecture. Students can study everything from business and law to engineering and health sciences. Northumbria is serious about helping students succeed in their careers, which is why it has strong connections with many industries to make sure students' education is relevant and focused on their future.

Entry Requirements for Indian Students

When applying, applicants will need to submit a personal statement that explains why they want to take this course and includes any other important details about their education. A reference from a past teacher or employer is also necessary. Applicants can also choose to upload their CV with their application to show their work experience.

Grade Requirements:

  • Applicants will need at least a 2:2 honours degree in architecture from an accredited school. Ideally, applicants should also have at least three months of work experience in an architectural practice after completing Part 1.
  • However, don't worry if you don't have that experience; the school look at every application individually, especially if the student can show they have strong transferable skills and relevant knowledge.

English Proficiency:

  • Applicants from non-English speaking backgrounds need a minimum overall score of 6.5 in the IELTS Academic test, with no component score below 5.5.
  • The university also accepts several other recognised English language tests.

Cost of Study

For the MArch Architecture programme, the annual tuition fee for international students for the 2025/26 academic year is £19,350.

Scholarships

Northumbria University provides various scholarships and financial aid to postgraduate students. One of the best-known options is the Chevening Scholarship, a prestigious award from the UK government for standout scholars who have the potential to be future leaders. If students get one, it can cover their tuition fees, give them a living allowance, and even pay for their flights home.

The university also offers a couple of great discounts. If students pay their deposit before a certain date, they will automatically get a £500 discount on their tuition. And if they have studied at Northumbria before, either as a current student or an alum, they will be eligible for a discount on their course fees. It’s a great way to save some money if they are coming back to study.
