BSc Forensic Science with Foundation Year

Course Overview

The BSc Forensic Science (with Foundation Year) at Teesside University is a four-year programme designed to build students’ scientific and analytical skills for careers in forensic investigation and related sciences. The course begins with a foundation year that strengthens your understanding of core subjects like chemistry, biology, and data analysis before progressing into the advanced forensic modules.

During the degree, you’ll explore topics such as forensic biology, molecular techniques, analytical chemistry, genetics, and toxicology. You’ll also gain an understanding of crime scene investigation, evidence handling, and the legal process, including how scientific evidence is presented in court.

The first year focuses on essential science and lab skills, including chemistry principles, biological systems, analytical methods, and data interpretation. Later years introduce modules such as Forensic Biology and Genomics, Trace Evidence and Forensic Enhancement, Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics, and Expert Witness and Legal Practice.

Learning happens through a combination of lectures, seminars, lab sessions, workshops, and simulated crime scenes. You can also choose an optional work placement year (at no extra cost) to gain real-world experience. Assessment methods include written assignments, lab reports, exams, practical work, projects, and oral presentations.
