BA 2D Animation and Stop Motion

The BA (Hons) 2D Animation and Stop Motion at Teesside University, Middlesbrough, is a three-year course that teaches students drawing, pre-visualisation, cinematography, hand-drawn 2D animation, and Stop Motion skills. They will also learn how to bring ideas to life using traditional and digital techniques, supported by software like Toon Boom Harmony and Dragonframe.

In this course, students gain experience in the animation pre-production and production pipelines by working with other animation students on team projects as specialist 2D animators, stop motion animators, or character designers. Within three years, students start with animation basics, then proceed to advanced performance, storytelling and project work. Final year students create a major film or visual effects piece and often work on industry briefs.

Students learn through workshops, lectures, seminars, and practical studio sessions. Assessment is project-based, including storyboards, animations, portfolios, and presentations to mirror industry work and prepare students for creative careers in animation or related fields.

Grade Requirements

• International students must have 96-112 UCAS points and a portfolio if their Level 3 qualifications do not include a creative subject such as Art, Design, Drawing, Animation or Games Art/Design. Applicants should demonstrate skills in life and observational drawing.

• A 60-65% in Class 12 is required for Indian students; mature students or candidates with alternative education or experience may also be considered on a case-by-case basis. 

English Proficiency

• International students need an IELTS overall score of 5.5 in each component. A PTE Academic minimum score of 59 may qualify applicants with strong English grades for a waiver.
