BSc Food Science and Nutrition

Course Overview

The BSc Food Science and Nutrition at Northumbria University, Newcastle, helps you build a strong understanding of food and nutrition. You will learn about food safety, how new food products are created, food processing, and clinical nutrition. You will also gain practical experience through lab work and real-world activities.

This course gives you two options. You can follow the general Food Science and Nutrition route, or you can choose to focus on Human Nutrition, which is more suitable for careers in nutrition. If you follow the Human Nutrition pathway, you can apply to join the UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists (UKVRN) at Associate level after you graduate.

The course includes a six-week work placement. You can also choose to do a longer placement with a company, which will help you apply your knowledge in real situations.

About University

Northumbria University is a public university in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, in the northeast of England. The university started as a college in 1877. It became a university in 1992 and is now very well-respected. In 2022, it was named the UK University of the Year by Times Higher Education.

Northumbria University's teaching and research are organised into four main faculties: Faculty of Arts, Design and Social Sciences; Faculty of Business and Law; Faculty of Engineering and Environment; and  Faculty of Health and Life Sciences.

Entry Requirements for Bangladeshi Students

Grade Requirements:

  • A UCAS tariff score of 112 from a combination of qualifications, including A-level, T Level, BTEC Diplomas/Extended Diplomas, Access to HE Diplomas, or the International Baccalaureate, is required to study this course. 

English Proficiency:

  • Non-native speakers of English are required to show proficiency in English by having an IELTS overall score of 6.5 with no component below 6.0. Equivalent tests are also accepted. 

Cost of Study

For the 2025/2026 entry, the tuition fee to study the BSc Food Science and Nutrition at Northumbria University, Newcastle is £20,950. Please note that fees are paid annually, and the university may increase fees in the second and subsequent years of your course at its discretion.

Scholarships

Northumbria University offers scholarships and financial aid to international students. For example, the Northumbria International Scholarship gives some students up to £3,000 off their tuition fees. To get this scholarship, you must be an international student and pay your fees.
