Course Overview

The Applied Sciences Foundation Year at Northumbria University, Newcastle, is designed for students who are passionate about science and want a practical introduction that will help prepare them for their chosen degree. This course will provide students with fundamental scientific knowledge, skills, and experience in several fields of science and then advance to a full degree programme.

The course covers areas including biology, chemistry, food science and forensic science, as well as establishing the laboratory skills, basic numeracy skills, data handling, ICT and study skills of the students. Learning and teaching methods allow a transition from Level 3 qualifications to those essential for access to specific science-based BSc degree courses. The assessment methods include formal examinations, written laboratory reports, essays, oral presentations, literature surveys, project work, poster presentations, and electronic submissions.

Northumbria University is a public research university located in Newcastle, North East England.  The university has its origins in the Rutherford College, founded in 1877. It then became Newcastle Polytechnic in 1969 before gaining university status in 1992. The university has approximately 38,300 students.

Entry Requirements for Bangladeshi Students

Applicants are to submit a personal statement explaining their interest in the Applied Sciences Foundation Year programme and relevant academic experience, including an academic or employer reference. A CV may be uploaded to show any relevant work experience.

Grade Requirements:

  • Applicants typically need 80 UCAS Tariff points (From a combination of acceptable Level 3 qualifications, which may include: A-level, T Level or BTEC Diplomas/Extended Diplomas, Access to HE Diplomas, or the International Baccalaureate).

English Proficiency:

  • Non-English speaking applicants need an overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0, with a minimum of 5.5 in each component.
  • Alternative English language tests like PTE or TOEFL are accepted.

Cost of Study

The tuition fee for this course is £19,350 per year for international students. Tuition fees are reviewed annually and are subject to change.

International students can also qualify for the London Cost of Living Bursary worth £1,334 to cover the living costs for one month in London.
