Master’s degree in the UK for International Students: Your Complete Guide
The UK is one of the best places in the world to get a Master’s degree. For international students, it offers something genuinely rare: a one-year full-time master's from a world-ranked university, plus 18 months of post-study work rights through the Graduate Route visa. Most courses take only one year to finish, which is a huge advantage. By graduating faster, you can start your career and earn a salary much sooner.
Studying in the UK gives you access to some of the best research in the world and helps you build professional connections that can open doors in your career or wherever you choose to work after graduating.
Categorising Your Postgraduate Pathway
There are various types of Master's degrees in the UK. The best one for you will depend on your plans:
Taught Degrees (MA, MSc, MBA): These are the most popular choices. They help you get ready for a better job. You will have a regular timetable with classes and meetings with your teachers. At the end, you usually write a final report called a dissertation. These are great if you want to become an expert in your career.
Research Degrees (MRes, MPhil): These focus on academia. You will spend most of your time on independent inquiry and a large thesis. This is the best path if you want to become a researcher or a professor.
Conversion Degrees: These are "career changers”. If you studied History but now want to work in Computing or Psychology, you can take a conversion course to learn a completely new subject in one year.
Integrated Master’s: This is a 4-year programme that takes you from a beginner to a Master's level in one long course.
By knowing your goal, whether it is a new job or becoming a researcher, you can pick the path that is right for you.
How Much Does a Master's Degree in the UK Cost?
Tuition for a UK master's typically ranges from £10,000 to £30,000 per year, depending on your subject and university, with MBA programmes sometimes higher. Living costs average around £12,000–£15,000 per year outside London, and £15,000–£18,000 in the capital. The good news is that scholarships like the Chevening Award and many university-specific bursaries are genuinely open to international students — and they're more accessible than most people think. Your AHZ advisor can help you map out the full picture and identify funding you may not know you're eligible for.
Entry Standards & Technical Requirements
To study for a Master’s degree in the UK, you must meet certain standards. These rules exist to make sure you can manage the fast-paced and difficult work of a graduate course.
Your Bachelor’s Degree: Most universities want you to have a good degree (this is usually called a 2:1 or Upper Second Class in the UK). However, for 2026 entry, many institutions are increasingly flexible; they may accept a 2:2 if you have significant relevant professional experience.
English Language: You usually need an IELTS score of 6.5. You also cannot have a low score (usually below 6.0) in any part of the test, such as speaking or writing. Other English tests (SELT) are often accepted too.
Your Documents: You will need to provide a CV (your work and study history) and two letters of recommendation from your past teachers or managers. You must also write a Personal Statement. This is a short essay explaining why you want to study the course and how it will help your career.
Every university is slightly different. It is always a good idea to check the exact requirements for your specific course.
Application Lifecycle & Deadlines
Applying for a Master’s degree in the UK is a step-by-step process. Unlike undergraduate courses, most postgraduate applications are made directly to the university through its online portals.
Step 1: Research the SOP. Start early. The most important document is your Statement of Purpose (SOP). This is an essay where you explain why you are a great student for the course. In popular schools, this essay can be the reason you are accepted.
Step 2: Send your Application. You will upload your documents and your SOP to the university portal.
Step 3: Check your Offers.
A Conditional Offer means you are accepted if you finish your current degree with good grades or pass an English test.
An Unconditional Offer means your place is 100% confirmed, with no further requirements.
It is very important to watch for deadlines. Many courses close early if they get too many students, so apply as soon as you can!
Investment: Tuition, Living, & Funding
Before you move to the UK in 2026, it is important to understand the total cost. This includes your studies and your daily life.
Tuition Fees: Most courses cost between £11,480 and £33,000. For instance, courses such as Medicine or an MBA usually cost more.
Living Costs: You will need about £12,000 to £15,000 per year for rent, food, and bills. Remember, living in London is much more expensive than living in the North of England or Wales.
Health Fee: You must also pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS). This is a required fee that lets you use the UK’s doctors and hospitals (the NHS) while you are a student.
Scholarships: Many universities offer “merit-based” scholarships. This means that if you have very good grades, the school might offer to reduce your tuition.
AHZ can give you expert advice on how to find scholarships and pick a city that fits your budget. This helps you get a great degree without spending more than you need to.
Postgraduate Support & Student Life
UK universities provide a world-class environment designed for your success. You will have access to specialised research libraries and 1-on-1 support from academic supervisors who guide your final project.
One of the great benefits is the dedicated Career Hubs. The services are designed to boost your chances of getting a job abroad and will help you secure a “Skilled Worker” sponsor and get to grips with the UK’s job market. Beyond academics, you will have a variety of housing options, including university-run halls or modern Private Purpose-Built Student Accommodation (PBSA). This means you have a safe, supportive community while you focus on your career goals.
Work Rights: During & After Your Studies
Living and studying in the UK gives you a great chance to get work experience and meet people from all over the world.
While you are studying for your Master’s degree, you can work up to 20 hours every week during the school term. When you have university holidays, like at Christmas or during the summer, you are allowed to work full-time. This is a good way to earn extra money and see how British companies work.
One of the best things about a UK degree is the Graduate Visa. You can apply for this visa after you’ve finished your course, so you can stay and work in the UK for 2 years. You don’t need to have a job offer or be sponsored by a company to apply.
This two-year period is the perfect time to find internships, gain professional experience, and meet people in your industry, connecting the path from being a student to a successful international career. With these work rights, you can complete your studies with a strong CV and real experience in the UK job market.
