A new survey has revealed that 75% of UK students support adding esports to the school curriculum, with 64% already involved in esports-related academic activities. This research was carried out by Censuswide for Tencent in partnership with the British Esports Federation and Ukie.
The study surveyed 2,000 young people aged 16 to 27 who are interested in the creative and entertainment industry. Here’s what they found:
40% of respondents are thinking about careers in video game-related fields.
58% believe esports offers more accessible career opportunities than traditional fields like law or engineering.
Financial challenges remain a barrier for 36% of students looking to pursue esports-related degrees.
33% feel that career pathways in esports are unclear.
Currently, 16 UK universities offer esports degree programs, but there’s a growing demand for better support and guidance in this field.
Tom Dore, Vice President of the British Esports Federation, highlighted the importance of including esports in school, college, and university curriculums. He said:
“Esports in curricula in secondary, further, and higher education is equipping young people with the skills needed for careers in esports, gaming, and the wider digital, creative, and STEM sectors.”
Nick Poole, CEO of Ukie, added:
"Esports plays a key role in shaping the future of work and creativity, offering young people opportunities to develop skills and pursue careers at the intersection of technology, media, and interactive entertainment.
Esports is more than just gaming—it’s a pathway to careers in technology, media, and beyond. With the UK leading Europe in student esports participation, the sector is positioned for significant growth. Students need better access to education and clear career opportunities to reach their full potential in the esports industry.
However, AHZ supports innovative educational trends like this and encourages students to explore fields that align with their passions and skills. If you’re interested in studying in the UK, our team can guide you towards the best opportunities in gaming, esports, and beyond!
