new monthly maintenance standards

UK Student Visa: New Financial Requirements for 2025

Published Date :30 October 2024Category :News

International students coming to the UK need to show that they have enough money to support themselves. These funds are important to help students manage their living costs while they study.

However, on 10 September 2024, UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) announced some changes to these maintenance standards. Under the new rules, international students will need to prove they have the following funds to cover their living expenses:

  • For students in London: £1,483 per month, which adds up to £13,347 for nine months
  • For students outside London: £1,136 per month, totalling £10,224 for nine months

The new requirements will apply to students arriving in the UK on or after January 2, 2025. The government has said they will keep reviewing and updating these financial requirements regularly to keep up with inflation and changes in domestic maintenance loans.

“Students from developing countries may find it more challenging to meet these increased financial requirements, potentially leading to a less diverse campus environment,” Nooh warned.

However, a Flywire spokesperson told The PIE,

"Therefore, as the cost of living increases, it is essential that maintenance requirements are reviewed and adjusted to set realistic expectations for international students and give them a chance to thrive in their studies”.

This change is a core part of the UK’s ongoing effort to maintain its standing as a supportive and attractive study destination for international students.
