The number of international students applying for undergraduate courses in the UK continues to rise steadily. Latest figures from the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) show a significant increase in demand from non-UK applicants ahead of the upcoming academic year.
Official UCAS data published after the 30 June deadline show a 7.1% increase in international undergraduate applications from 2025 to 2026, which is the highest figure ever recorded by the platform.
In total, international applicant numbers rose from 138,460 in 2025 to 148,350 in 2026, highlighting strong, ongoing interest in UK higher education despite global shifts and economic changes.
Key Figures and Top Countries Sending Students to the UK
The data outlines the primary nations driving this growth in undergraduate applications:
China: It remains the largest international market, sending 38,000 applicants.
India: It is considered the second-largest non-EU applicant pool, with 11,470 applicants.
United States: It accounted for 8,270 applicants.
Ireland: It is represented by 6,880 applicants.
Hong Kong: It is located in the top five with 4,990 applicants.
UCAS chief executive Jo Saxton noted that while application totals are strong, alongside a 5% increase in domestic 18-year-old applicants, she remains “aware” of the financial pressures facing students in an "uncertain economic environment." She added that "UCAS is working hard to remove barriers and help students make informed decisions."
Increased applicant volumes mean entry standards and offer conditions remain competitive at sought-after institutions. UCAS figures track undergraduate applications submitted strictly through its central system. Total international enrolments, including direct university applications and foundation entry pathways, are expected to be higher.
The latest figures from UCAS reveal a surge in global interest, with 148,350 non-UK students applying for undergraduate programmes in 2026. This 7.1% annual increase was predominantly driven by strong applicant numbers from China, India, the US, Ireland, and Hong Kong.
