Concerns over English proficiency of international students in UK universities

A recent BBC investigation has raised concerns about the English language skills of some international students in the UK.

Yasmin (not her real name), an Iranian student studying for a master’s degree in international finance, was surprised to find that many of her classmates had difficulty with English. She said that only a few British students were in her class, and most students needed help from others to do their coursework or even paid someone to attend lectures for them.

This problem is growing, with the University and College Union (UCU) saying that some UK universities are ignoring language skills to get more money from overseas students.

One professor shared that 70% of his master's students had poor English, making it hard to communicate in lessons.

Some students use translation apps or even pay for others to write their essays, but experts warn this lowers the quality of education and makes degrees less valuable. Universities UK says that strict language checks are in place for international students and that they meet government-set standards.

International students have become very important to UK universities, with many schools depending on the money they bring in. However, some universities are struggling financially because fewer international students are coming. Changes in visa rules and the high cost of living are making it harder for students to come to the UK.

Jo Grady from the UCU said that universities should focus on providing high-quality education rather than just making money, while also recognising the financial pressures universities are facing.

As the debate continues, the challenge is finding the right balance between maintaining high academic standards and meeting the financial needs of universities.

To address these concerns, AHZ makes sure students are fully prepared with the skills they need for academic and career success. They offer complete support to help students start their university journey on the right foot.

This helps make it easier for students to overcome language challenges and do well in their studies.
