MSc Genetic Manipulation and Molecular Cell Biology

University of Sussex

Course overview

This Master's programme teaches students to be skilled researchers in molecular biology. This subject is important for almost all areas of biology today. The course focuses on how to work with genes and proteins using molecular biology methods. Students will get to do research projects in areas like the Genome Damage and Stability Centre.

This course is mostly about research. Students will spend a lot of time doing their own research project in a busy lab. The teaching covers both theory and intense hands-on lab skills. This prepares graduates well for a research career in universities or companies. The main way students are assessed is by submitting their research thesis and then defending it in an oral examination (viva voce).

Entry requirements

Candidates applying for this Master's degree are required to submit a personal statement explaining their motivation for choosing the course, their career aspirations, and how their previous studies relate to the subject. An academic reference is also required from a teacher or professional. Students should ensure all parts of their application clearly demonstrate their academic potential and suitability for a science degree.

Grade Requirements:

  • Applicants should hold at least a lower second-class (2:2) undergraduate honours degree. This degree must be in a relevant science subject, such as Biochemistry, Biomedical Science, Genetics, or Cell Biology.
  • If a candidate has a degree in a subject that is not as closely related, they would usually need an upper second-class (2:1) honours degree to be considered.

English Requirements:

  • Applicants from countries where English is not the first language must demonstrate their proficiency. The requirement is generally an IELTS Academic score of 6.0 overall, with a minimum score of 5.5 in each of the four components (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking).
