BSc Sport and Exercise Science with foundation year and placement
Course overview
The BSc Sport and Exercise Science with Foundation Year and Placement at the University of Surrey is a five-year programme. It begins with a foundation year for students who do not yet meet degree entry criteria. A placement year is included, allowing students to gain real work experience. The course teaches how the body functions, how exercise affects health, and how to help people perform better. The course is accredited by BASES (British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences), giving professional credibility.
The foundation year includes modules in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and academic skills. It prepares students for degree study. In years 1–3, students cover anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, sports nutrition, psychology, health and performance testing. In year 4 (placement year), students work with clubs, sports labs, health departments or fitness companies.
The course also offers optional qualifications like personal training or fitness coaching. Students are taught using lectures, lab sessions, workshops, tutorials, and practical work. They use sports labs and measurement equipment to test movement, strength, endurance, and body systems. Assessment includes exams, lab reports, projects, presentations, and the final research project. The placement year is assessed by employer feedback, a reflective report, and possibly a placement presentation.
