BSc Gestalt Counselling Top-up

University of Portsmouth

Course overview

This BSc Gestalt Counselling (Top-up) at the University of Portsmouth is a one-year top-up degree. It is for students who already have a relevant qualification, like a Level 5 DipHE in Counselling. The course allows them to turn that existing study into a full Bachelor's degree (BSc). It teaches Gestalt counselling, which is a way of helping people look at themselves and their life as a 'whole picture' (Gestalt). This method helps people find new ideas and ways to solve their problems.

Students will be taught advanced Gestalt ideas and practical skills. This includes how to help people who have more difficult issues, such as anxiety, depression, and relationship problems. The course is designed to be flexible, with lessons set for one day each week (Fridays) and six Saturday workshops over the year. Students will also complete a research project, so it works well if they already have a job.

Entry requirements

Candidates are required to submit a personal statement in which they discuss their reasons for applying for the course and other relevant information regarding their studies. A relevant academic and/or employer reference is also required. Students have the option to upload their CVs along with their applications to demonstrate their work experience. All applicants must pass an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check before they begin the course.

  • Applicants need a Level 5 qualification (such as a DipHE or Foundation Degree) in counselling from specific pathways, including Gestalt, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or Humanistic Counselling.

  • They must also provide proof of completing at least 80 hours of work placement in a counselling setting.

English Language Requirements:

  • Applicants from non-English-speaking backgrounds need to demonstrate English language proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 6.0 overall, with no score below 5.5 in any component.
