PhD Food Manufacturing and Technology

Course Overview

The University of Lincoln’s PhD in Food Manufacturing and Technology is a postgraduate degree that focuses on advanced research in food production. The modules include topics like food chemistry, microbiology, automation, and sustainability. The programme is 2-4 years for full-time study and 3-8 years for part-time study. Students learn the food-making processes from scratch, and how to address challenges in the food sector while improving manufacturing methods to ensure quality control. Research areas include product development, food safety, and quality systems.

As part of this programme, students will do their research. This will allow them to share new and original ideas in this field. Students have the liberty to work with food industry experts and partners. They will work together to solve the problems in food manufacturing and reduce the risk of low-quality food. The National Centre for Food Manufacturing (NCFM) provides students with the opportunity to engage with tutors in a learner-friendly manner.

The course involves research with assessment based on a final thesis, which is evaluated through a viva voce (oral examination). This assessment process confirms that the research presented is original, demonstrates good writing quality with no errors, and provides a valuable contribution to the advancement of knowledge in food manufacturing and technology.
