University of Kent

Medieval and Early Modern Studies - MA

University of KentCanterbury, United Kingdom

Course overview

Migration and globalisation, discovery and invention, power, politics and conflict - themes that transcend time and geography and recur throughout history. This course explores those themes from Late Antiquity in the 4th century, through medieval history and the early modern period to the late 18th century. Our interdisciplinary approach encompasses history, literature and languages, palaeography, art history, material culture, archaeology and performance studies.

Based in the beautiful medieval city of Canterbury, you will benefit from engagement with our rich local heritage and archives. You will visit historical sites, museums, and archives, with training in handling precious artefacts and documents right from the start of the course. You will deepen your passion for history - sharing and learning from diverse perspectives, experiences and specialist interests of our students and staff.

Optional modules allow you to create your own bespoke pathway exploring premodern race, digital humanities or the notion of the sacred. Our material approaches modules are excellent preparation for a career in heritage and culture.
