Course overview

The PhD Psychology is a research-focused postgraduate programme that requires students to undertake a significant piece of independent study, resulting in an original thesis. Research can be conducted across the School of Psychology’s expertise, covering areas such as Developmental, Organisational, Forensic, Social, and Cognitive Psychology. Full-time students typically complete the degree over three to four years, while part-time students take five to six years.

Formal assessment for the PhD is based solely on the final dissertation (or thesis), which must report the applicant's original research and thought. Students receive continual guidance and support from a supervisory team, usually consisting of a main and secondary supervisor, throughout their candidature. All researchers must also complete required professional training in research-specific and transferable skills.
