LLM Law by Research

University of Kent

Course overview

This Master's degree, the LLM Law (by Research) at the University of Kent, is designed for in-depth legal study. Students focus entirely on researching one specific area of law, examining its historical, social, and economic context. Full-time students typically complete the degree in one year, while part-time students take two years.

For this research degree, students will be assigned two supervisors who will meet with them every month to provide support. Their final assessment is mainly based on a dissertation (a long research paper) of up to 15,000 words. Students must also complete required training in legal research and writing skills. International students have the option to complete the entire program remotely from their home country.

Entry requirements

Candidates are required to submit a personal statement in which they discuss their reasons for applying for the course and other relevant information about their studies. An academic and/or employer reference is also required. Students have the option to upload their CV along with their applications to demonstrate their work experience.

Grade Requirements:

  • Applicants need at least a first or good second-class honours degree in law or a related subject.

  • Alternatively, a degree with a lower second class will be acceptable if the student can demonstrate significant relevant professional experience, as all applications are considered on an individual basis.

English Proficiency:

  • Applicants from non-English speaking backgrounds need to score 6.5 overall in IELTS (with a minimum of 6.0 in each section) or submit equivalent test scores, such as a PTE Academic score of 67 or higher.
