BSc Psychology with a Foundation Year

University of Kent

Course overview

The BSc Psychology with Foundation Year at the University of Kent is a four-year programme. It is tailored for students who need additional preparation before starting a full psychology degree. The foundation year focuses on helping students build confidence in academic skills. This could be in the area of studying, writing, and understanding scientific concepts. During this year, students are introduced to the basics of psychology and develop essential academic abilities before moving on to the main degree. After completing the foundation year, students progress to the full degree.

Students explore a broader range of psychological topics, including brain functions, childhood and adult development, emotional processes, and mental health issues. In the final year, students undertake a research project under the supervision of an academic mentor. They can select a topic, design their own study, and write an in-depth report. Students are taught using a combination of lectures, workshops, practical sessions, and small-group activities. Assessment is carried out through a mix of essays, reports, presentations, short tests, digital tasks, and a final research project, all designed to track progress and develop skills throughout the course.
