Course overview

The LLM International Law (Global Sustainability and the Law) at the University of Hull is a one-year master’s degree that explores how law can be used to address climate change, protect the environment, and promote global justice. Students study the foundations of international law and then focus on key global challenges such as the Paris Climate Agreement, renewable energy regulation, ocean protection, human rights, and the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Teaching is practical and interactive. The course includes lectures, small-group seminars, problem-solving workshops, mock treaty negotiations, and guest lectures from professionals working with the United Nations, major NGOs, and international law firms. There may also be short field trips. Assessment is based on essays, presentations, group projects, case-based reports, and a final dissertation on a sustainability topic chosen by the student.

This programme is ideal for graduates with a law background or relevant professional experience who want to move into careers in climate policy, environmental organisations, government bodies, international charities, or sustainability-focused law firms. The course provides current knowledge and practical skills that are highly valued by employers worldwide.
