BSc Operating Department Practice

University of Hull

Course overview

This three-year, full-time course teaches students to become Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs). These ODPs are a crucial part of the surgical team, caring for patients before, during, and after their operation. It is a professional degree approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). The course was created together with local NHS hospitals and private clinics to help meet the constant need for more ODPs across the country.

Students' learning will be split between two main places. Half of their time will be spent learning at the award-winning Allam Medical Building, and the other half will be spent on real work placements in hospital operating theatres and wards. The hands-on practice happens in special facilities like a mock operating theatre and a critical care room. Their subjects will cover the key parts of an operation, such as Anaesthetic, Surgical, and Post-operative care (the care given after the operation).

Entry requirements

Candidates are required to submit a personal statement in which they discuss their reasons for applying for the course and other relevant information regarding their studies. A relevant academic and/or employer reference is also required. Students have the option to upload their CVs along with their applications to demonstrate their work experience, which is always welcomed.

Grade Requirements:

  • Applicants need 112 UCAS points, which is equivalent to A-level grades of BBC. At least 80 of these points must come from A-levels or other similar qualifications. For example, a BTEC Extended Diploma grade of DMM is accepted.
  • The University looks at the whole application, so a strong personal statement and relevant experience are important.

English Language Requirements:

  • Applicants from non-English speaking backgrounds need to show that they can speak and write English well enough for a healthcare course.
  • While the specific IELTS score for this programme is not listed on the course page, health professional degrees require a high standard, such as an IELTS overall score of 7.0, with no less than 6.5 in each skill. They should check the University's English language page for the exact requirements for Operating Department Practice.
