MSc by Dissertation Microbiology

University of Essex

Course overview

The University of Essex MSc (by Dissertation) Microbiology programme is a research-based Master of Science by Dissertation, offered by the School of Life Sciences, which allows students to develop interesting research ideas, undertake an independent project in areas such as medical microbiology, environmental microbiology, and genomic or biochemical analysis of microbial species or communities.

Students will work closely with a supervisor, engage with other researchers, professionals, practitioners, and access state-of-the-art laboratories, a well-connected research community, and field facilities (including automated labs, robotic liquid handling, and next-generation sequencing), and engage with the faculty’s research groups and external partners.

The support provided by your supervisor is a key feature of your research student experience, and you will have regular one-to-one meetings to discuss progress on your research. The supervisor will first assist the student in preparing a plan and research topic. Students must attend two formal supervisory board meetings each year to submit literature reviews and research reports to the Board members before the meeting.
