PhD School of Health Sport and Bioscience
Course overview
The PhD School of Health, Sport and Bioscience at the University of East London is a research programme that lets students study for an MPhil or a PhD within the School of Health, Sport and Bioscience. Students will work closely with expert supervisors on a large, original research project in a field like public health, sport science, or bioscience. The main goal is to create a significant piece of work that brings new knowledge to students' chosen subject area.
This programme requires students to work mostly on their own. It ends when students hand in a long written thesis (their main research paper), which they then have to defend in an oral exam (called a viva voce). Students must complete their research within the set timeframe and are expected to gain key skills in research methods and in preparing for a professional career. Students will be supported by an assigned Personal Academic Tutor and dedicated careers services.
Entry requirements
Candidates are required to write a research proposal that clearly explains the project they wish to study for their degree. They must also submit a personal statement discussing their reasons for applying and other relevant study information. You will also need to provide a relevant academic and/or employer reference. Students can upload their CVs with their applications to demonstrate their work experience.
Grade Requirements:
- Applicants should hold a Master's degree in a relevant field, such as public health, sport, or bioscience. Alternatively, the university may accept a relevant first-class or upper second-class honours degree for MPhil registration, with the potential to upgrade to PhD status later.
- Successful applicants must also provide a detailed and compelling research proposal that outlines their intended project.
English Proficiency:
- Applicants from non-English speaking backgrounds need to score 6.5 overall in the IELTS test, with no single component score lower than 6.0.
- Applicants can also submit equivalent scores from other approved Secure English Language Tests (SELT). They must satisfy all English language requirements before they can be admitted to the programme.
