LLM International Oil and Gas Law and Policy
Course overview
This 12-month, full-time master's degree (LLM) teaches students how governments manage and set rules for the oil and gas industry. It focuses on the legal agreements between countries that produce oil and the companies that invest in them. The course is taught by the Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law & Policy (CEPMLP), which has been a leader in this area since 1977.
Students will study the legal rights to oil and gas, how governments share these rights, and how financial risks are handled among investors. Topics include oil and gas taxes, the basic economics of petroleum, and the final stage of projects, such as paying for and completing the removal of old installations (decommissioning). Their grades will be based on coursework and a final major research project (thesis); applicants do not need a law degree to apply.
