MSci Nursing Learning Disabilities and Leadership

University of Derby

Course overview

The MSci Nursing (Learning Disabilities) and Leadership at the University of Derby is a four-year full-time programme. Students who do not hold a prior degree can earn a Master’s award and qualify for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) in the field of learning disabilities nursing. The course teaches how to support people with learning disabilities across a range of settings. Students gain skills in assessment, care planning, therapeutic support, advocacy and team leadership. By the end of the programme, they will be ready to work as registered learning disabilities nurses and lead care teams.

During the four years of study, students move from foundational nursing skills to advanced leadership and specialist practice in learning disabilities. The leadership element supports progression into roles where graduates lead teams, develop services or influence policy for learning disabilities care. Students learn through lectures, seminars, workshops, simulation labs and placement experience. Assessment methods include written exams, case studies, reflective portfolios, practical skills tests, project work and simulated clinical assessments.
