BEng Mechanical Engineering
Course overview
The BEng Mechanical Engineering course at Swansea University provides students with the knowledge and skills to understand how machines are designed, manufactured, and improved. Core areas of study include mechanics, materials, thermodynamics, fluid flow, and engineering design. Students gain practical experience using real equipment and industry-standard software, preparing them for careers in sectors such as automotive, aerospace, renewables, and manufacturing. The course is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).
In Year 1, students focus on fundamentals, including mathematics, mechanics, materials, manufacturing, data analysis, and workshop experience. Year 2 covers control systems, thermofluids, machine design, simulation, and research preparation. In Year 3, students complete an individual engineering project and study advanced manufacturing, fluid mechanics, dynamics, and design practice. Learning is delivered through lectures, seminars, computer work, practical labs, and design projects. Assessment methods include written exams, coursework, lab reports, design portfolios, and the final-year individual project.
