BEng Materials Science and Engineering with a Foundation Year

Swansea University

Course overview

The BEng Materials Science and Engineering (with Foundation Year) at Swansea University is a four-year full-time course. The first year is a foundation year to build strong basics in engineering, chemistry, maths, and computing. After the foundation year, students move into the full honours engineering degree. Throughout the course, students learn how the materials used in cars, aeroplanes, sports gear, and medical devices are made, tested, and improved. They develop both theory and hands-on skills in labs and workshops. Optional paths allow a year abroad or a year in industry for extra experience.

In the foundation year, students study core engineering topics including engineering science, foundational mathematics, materials chemistry, and introductory design. In the following years, students build up to materials science topics: properties of metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites; manufacturing and processing; computational modelling of materials; and applications in aerospace, automotive, energy, and sports sectors. The degree also offers the chance to take a year in industry or a year abroad, giving practical experience and helping students prepare for future jobs. Students are taught using lectures, seminars, practical lab sessions, and workshops. Assessment methods include written exams, coursework, lab reports, group projects, and practical tasks.
