BEng Engineering with Deferred Choice of Specialism with a Foundation Year

Swansea University

Course overview

Studying an Engineering BEng Honours degree at Swansea is now more accessible to students who do not have the typical entry grades. The integrated Foundation Year is the perfect way to begin a four-year journey. It is a supportive first step that not only gets students ready for degree-level study but also gives them time to decide on their final specialism. Students will not have to rush into choosing between subjects like Aerospace, Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering; they can make that choice later. The best part is that once they complete the Foundation Year, their place on the full degree course is guaranteed.

Students will not only learn theory; the academic programme will also develop their analytical skills with practical, hands-on experience using the latest, high-tech equipment. To supercharge their CV and overall experience, they will have the option to spend a year working in the real world on a Year in Industry or broaden their horizons with a Year Abroad. Their learning will be dynamic, delivered through a mix of traditional lectures, seminars, workshops, and important practical sessions, all supported by modern digital tools.

Entry requirements

Candidates are required to submit a personal statement in which they discuss their reasons for applying to the course and other relevant information regarding their studies. An academic and/or employer reference is also required. Students have the option to upload their Curriculum Vitae (CV) along with their applications to demonstrate their work experience.

Grade Requirements:

  • The typical A-Level offer for entry is between CCC and CDD.
  • Alternative qualifications include a BTEC Extended Diploma at DDD in an Engineering or Science subject, or 26 points in the International Baccalaureate.
  • Applicants must also achieve a minimum of two Grade A passes at GCSE level, which must include at least a Grade B in Mathematics and two other Science subjects.

English Proficiency:
