BSc Honours MSci Chemistry with Foundation Year

Sheffield Hallam University

Course overview

The BSc (Honours)/MSci Chemistry with Foundation Year at Sheffield Hallam University is designed for students who want to study chemistry but do not meet the entry requirements for a standard degree. After the foundation year, students move into the honours degree and learn chemistry in depth. They study physical, organic, inorganic, analytical chemistry, and modern lab skills. The course uses industry-standard instruments and modern teaching. The MSci option lets you study for an extra year for more research experience.

In the foundation year, students take six modules that build study skills and lab practice in chemistry and biology. Years 1 and 2 cover a broad base of chemistry subjects and labs. In the final year, students choose modules to specialise in areas like materials, environment, or pharmaceuticals. The course includes an optional placement year in the UK or abroad. Students are taught through lectures, lab sessions, workshops, and hands-on projects. They gain practical skills, learn to keep good lab records, analyse data, and work in teams. Assessment methods vary and include coursework, exams, lab reports, and practical tasks.
