BSc Honours MSci Biomedical Science with Foundation Year

Course Overview

The BSc (Hons)/MSci Biomedical Science with Foundation Year at Sheffield Hallam University is a four-year course that starts with a foundation year. This first year helps students build their knowledge in biology, chemistry, maths, and study skills. After the foundation year, students move into the degree programme. They study how the body works at the cell and molecular level, how diseases are diagnosed and treated, and how science links to medicine and research. The course is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) and approved for HCPC registration. When eligible, students gain the IBMS Certificate of Competence after successful hospital placements.

The final year, for the MSci route, offers a chance to work with research teams on specialist projects at the Biomolecular Sciences Research Centre. There is also an optional placement year with NHS labs such as Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and Rotherham General. Students are taught through lectures, lab work, workshops, small-group tutorials, guest talks, and real-world projects. Students work with industry-standard equipment and digital tools, and they conduct research in placement settings. Assessment methods include exams, lab reports, coursework, presentations, and feedback from placement supervisors.
