BSc Honours MSci Biochemistry with Foundation Year

Course Overview

This four-year course leads to an honours or master's degree in Biochemistry. The first year is a foundation year for students who do not meet the usual entry requirements for a full degree. The course teaches the main principles of chemistry and biology, as well as the important skills needed for university study.

The learning is focused on hands-on practice, with a strong emphasis on laboratory skills. Students will learn about core subjects like molecular and cellular biochemistry and modern lab techniques. The course also gives students the chance to do a year-long work placement to get professional experience.

Entry Requirements

Candidates are required to submit a personal statement in which they discuss their reasons for applying for the course and other relevant information regarding their studies. A relevant academic and/or employer reference is also required. Students have the option to upload their CV along with their applications to demonstrate their work experience.

Grade Requirements:

  • Applicants need 64 UCAS points. This must include at least 24 points from a single A-level and 16 points from a science subject, such as biology, chemistry, or human biology.
  • The university also accepts an Access to HE Diploma from a QAA-recognised science-based course, which typically requires 15 credits at level 2 and 45 at level 3.

English Proficiency:

  • Applicants from non-English speaking backgrounds need an IELTS score of 6.0 overall, with a minimum of 5.5 in each section.

Cost of Study

For international and EU students, the tuition fee is £17,155 per year.

Scholarships

Sheffield Hallam University offers many scholarships to international students. The GREAT Scholarships provide at least £10,000 towards tuition fees for students from specific countries.
