Nottingham Trent University

Course overview

The BSc Data Science (with Foundation Year) at Nottingham Trent University is a four-year course. The first (foundation) year covers programming, mathematics and computing science to build a strong base. After that, students move into the honours route where they study data analysis, machine learning, statistical modelling, big data tools, databases and computing systems. The course aims to give students the tools to turn large amounts of data into useful information and to work with real data problems.

This programme is offered full-time on the Clifton Campus. In the foundation year, students take modules that focus on maths, programming basics, computing fundamentals and professional skills. After the foundation year, the later years include modules in statistical analysis, data engineering, machine learning, information systems and a major project. Students learn through lectures, labs, workshops, coding sessions and group work. They will build software, analyse datasets, create visualisations and work on real projects. Assessment includes written exams, practical coursework, programming assignments, data projects and a final project or dissertation. Students move gradually from structured tasks in early years to more independent research or project work in later years.
