BSc Biological Sciences with foundation year

Nottingham Trent University

Course overview

The BSc Biological Science (with foundation year) at Nottingham Trent University is a four-year full-time course that starts with a foundation year. In the foundation year, students build essential skills in biology, chemistry, mathematics, study techniques and scientific thinking. After passing that year, they move into the honours degree in Biological Science. In the later years, they study topics such as cell biology, genetics, microbiology, ecology, physiology and biochemistry. This course is intended for students who may not have direct entry into Biological Science but want a pathway into it.

This is an integrated foundation degree, offered at NTU’s Clifton Campus. The foundation year acts as a springboard into the main BSc honours programme. After year one, students enter years two through four of the degree. The honours years include lab work, lectures, field modules and project work. Students may have opportunities for placement years or study abroad in some variants. The honours curriculum is designed to allow choice in modules such as microbiology, ecology, neuroscience or biochemistry. Students learn by lectures, seminars, lab practicals, fieldwork, workshops and independent study. Assessments include written exams, lab reports, essays, practical assessments, data analysis tasks, group projects and a final research or honours project.
