Overview

The STEM Foundation Year at Edge Hill University is an integrated four-year program designed to prepare students for science-based undergraduate degrees in fields such as biology, computer science, engineering, or geography and geology. It is designed for students who meet the university’s minimum entry criteria but lack the subject-specific qualifications or wish to strengthen their scientific knowledge before progressing to a degree.

The program, delivered by the Language Centre at the state-of-the-art Creative Edge facility, equips students with essential academic and transferable skills, including academic writing, critical analysis, systematic thinking, and personal reflection, alongside a solid foundation in applied mathematics and physics.

The curriculum emphasises both core scientific knowledge and skills necessary for university-level study. Students engage in a group project that fosters teamwork and the ability to handle diverse information sources, alongside modules that provide introductions to their chosen pathway. Assessment methods include practical exercises, reports, essays, presentations, and examinations, with a focus on developing independent and collaborative work skills.
