MSc Applied Bioinformatics

Course Overview

The MSc Applied Bioinformatics at Cranfield University is the first and longest-running bioinformatics course of its kind in the UK. The programme is designed for individuals with knowledge of both biological and computing aspects of bioinformatics. It provides a hands-on learning experience, combining advances in analysing high-throughput genomic, transcriptomic, and metabolomics data.

The programme covers the following key learning areas, including programming languages such as Python, Java, R, and SQL, alongside modern web technologies. Dedicated modules focus on bioinformatics protocols for Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and 3rd Generation Sequencing (3GS). The curriculum integrates theoretical knowledge with practical experience in data analysis.

The course is delivered through taught modules, group projects, and an individual project. The group project offers real-life team working experience, while the individual thesis project can be undertaken at Cranfield or an external organisation. Practical learning includes hands-on modules and an individual research dissertation, assessed through coursework (40%), group projects (20%), and a research project (40%)

Entry Requirements

Grade Requirements:

  • Applicants typically require a UK 2:2 honours degree or its equivalent in a life science or computer science subject is required.
  • Applicants holding other qualifications with significant experience may also be considered.

English Proficiency:

  • An overall IELTS score of 6.5 is required, with a minimum of 5.5 in each component.
  • Accepted alternatives include PTE, TOEFL iBT or SELT.

Cost of Study

The international tuition fee for the MSc Applied Bioinformatics programme is £26,475 per year. Tuition fees are subject to annual review.
