The MA International Relations programme at the University of Portsmouth is available in two formats: a full-time course that lasts one year or a part-time course that takes two years. Students will gain the skills to analyse international issues related to global politics, society, and security, and create solutions that can help improve the world.
Throughout the course, students will study critical subjects such as terrorism, political violence, and social movements. They will take various modules, including Exploring International Relations and Contemporary Security in International Relations. There is also an opportunity for students to focus on a specific area of interest for their dissertation project.
Studying for a Master's degree is more in-depth and specialised compared to an undergraduate degree. Students will work closely with teachers who are experts in their fields. While a lot of time will be spent on independent study and research, most classes will take place in person. Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, and discussions, while assessments will consist of presentations, essays, reports, and a dissertation, preparing graduates for careers in fields like political analysis, international development, and non-profit work.
