BSc Speech and Language Therapy

Course Overview

The BSc Speech and Language Therapy at De Montfort University is designed to prepare you for a professional career as a registered speech and language therapist. Accredited by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists and approved by the Health and Care Professions Council, it equips you with the qualifications to practise professionally in the UK.

It covers all major aspects of the field, including phonetics and phonology, psychology, medical sciences, linguistics, language development, communication disabilities, evidence-based practice, and intervention. Essentially, this course is designed to develop you into a skilled practitioner capable of supporting people with speech, language, communication, or swallowing difficulties across the lifespan. It is taught by experienced academics and practising clinicians with expertise across a range of clinical and research areas.

This course is delivered through a block-teaching format, enabling you to focus on one subject at a time. Each year also includes practice-based learning through both weekly and block placements in various settings such as schools, hospitals, care homes, and community environments, allowing you to build hands-on clinical skills from the start of the programme.

The course strongly emphasises practical and applied learning through lectures, seminars, workshops, inter-professional activities, and placements. You will engage with service users, collaborate with peers from other health and education disciplines, and work alongside experienced professionals. Assessments come in varied formats, including case-based learning, simulated clinical experiences, written assignments, presentations, and a final-year dissertation.
