MA Translation and AI

Course Overview

The MA Translation and AI programme taught at the University of Surrey combines core translation skills with modern technology. Students learn translation theory, practice, post-editing, terminology management, localisation, and how to use tools like neural machine translation (NMT) and generative AI models. The course aims to prepare graduates who can work in a world where AI supports and challenges language professions. Surrey’s Centre for Translation Studies leads in integrating translation practice and AI tools. The programme also offers interpreting and language technologies modules and supports remote and hybrid interpreting practice using AI and speech technology.

Students follow a structured curriculum with compulsory modules and options. Practical modules involve translation in specialised domains (business, legal, technical, medical), project work, applying AI tools to translation tasks, and reflecting on how AI affects translator decisions. The course has two pathways: the multilingual pathway (many languages) and a Chinese pathway specifically for Chinese-English translation. Teaching methods include lectures, hands-on labs (using translation software and AI tools), seminars, workshops, group work, and individual projects. Assessments include translation projects, essays, presentations, and a final dissertation or placement option.
