BSc Nutrition with foundation year and placement

University of Surrey

Course overview

The BSc Nutrition with Foundation Year and Placement at the University of Surrey is a five-year programme. It begins with a foundation year for students who do not yet meet entry requirements. After that, students study for the BSc Nutrition degree. The programme includes a Professional Training Year (placement year) where students work in a food, health, or nutrition setting. This lets students gain real experience before they graduate.

In the degree years, students learn about how food, nutrients, and diets affect health. They study the science of nutrition, human physiology, food systems, public health, and clinical nutrition. The placement year helps students connect theory with work in hospitals, industry, or research.

In the first (foundation) year, students study core sciences such as biology, chemistry, and mathematics. They also learn academic skills, lab skills, and study techniques. This prepares them for the main degree. In years two to four, the degree modules include human nutrition, metabolism, clinical dietetics, public health nutrition, food safety, and research methods. Students may choose elective topics in areas such as sports nutrition or global nutrition. The programme is accredited by the Association for Nutrition (AfN). That means graduates meet the standards to become an associate nutritionist. Students will learn through lectures, lab practicals, workshops, tutorials, and group work. Assessment methods include exams, coursework, lab reports, oral presentations, and a final research project.
